Loneliness of the Closing-Pitcher

Loneliness of the Closing-Pitcher

(for Jeffrey)

When first he had played it he was all scared
He had felt like fighting a lion
But this was Baseball- a simple game
And he loved it so much and his heart was a flame.

Today he walks slowly and full concentrated
Climbing the mound, watching just glove and shoes
Hearing nothing but only his heartbeat-
Trained for a moment so many years

The last game and for him the chance
To bring the Title home
To win the biggest Baseball-Game
He was dreaming of for so long

World Serious and three Strikes he needs
And he will rise as a Star
And no one sees what it really means
And the loneliness that he feels

Three loaded Bases
One point in advantage
And three more Strikes needed to throw!
Sweating blood, loneliness, nowhere to go.

Full concentrated and like a tiger
He watches the catchers sign
A fastball then, what a perfect one-
Caught his catcher the first ball he throw?

Three loaded Bases
One point in advantage
And two more Strikes needed to throw!
Sweating blood, loneliness, nowhere to go.

Strike! -Was the word he’d needed to hear
Three loaded Bases
One point in advantage
And two more Strikes needed to throw!
Sweating blood, loneliness, nowhere to go.

Strike! -At his second Pitch
All to win and to loose-
Three loaded Bases
One point in advantage
And one more Strike needed to throw!
Sweating blood, loneliness, nowhere to go.

And than the third perfect Pitch

Strike! - Minutes of eternity gone
A firework over his head,
And slowly he stumbles happily down
Loneliness over many years
Won him- The Pitchers Crown! -
